chin-implantA weak or undefined profile may be caused by the lack of a pronounced chin. Men and women who lack a prominent chin often feel that they don’t have an aesthetically pleasing facial balance. For some patients, an undefined or receding chin can cause other facial features, such as the nose, to appear too large.

Chin implants help sculpt a more proportional facial shape and provide you with a strong and appealing profile.

Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates for chin implant surgery are in good health and have realistic expectations about their results. These men and women require a more dramatic enhancement to the chin area than what can be achieved using synthetic fillers. Patients seeking chin implant surgery may identify with one or more of the following:

  • A weak or receding chin
  • Lack of appealing facial symmetry
  • Other facial features seem disproportionately large compared to the chin
  • A small, undefined chin is a source of anxiety
  • Lack of confidence in your facial appearance

Chin Implant Procedure

Chin implant surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure with the patient under general anesthesia. However, some patients may be able to have their surgery performed using local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Chin implants are crafted out of cohesive silicone and can be customized to highlight your facial shape. Dr. Coleman inserts the implant through either an incision under the chin or inside the mouth where the lower gums meet the lips. Once the implant is inserted, Dr. Coleman makes sure it is positioned correctly in the tissue pocket of the chin. Your incisions are then closed and bandaged.

You will experience some bruising and swelling following your procedure and should rest with your head elevated to prevent excess swelling. Drains may be placed to prevent excess fluid buildup. You will be restricted to a liquid-only diet for one to two days and may be limited to a soft-food diet for up to ten days. Most patients can return to work within one week of their surgery and can resume their normal exercise program and other physical activities after four weeks. All major swelling should begin to subside after six weeks, at which time your final results will become visible.

One benefit of chin implants over synthetic fillers is that they provide long-lasting chin enhancement. Chin implants also result in very little, if any, visible scarring.
