tummy-tuckIn our younger years, having an attractive looking abdominal area was easy. However, factors such as aging, slower metabolism, and pregnancy, lead to things like weight gain, stretched out skin, and loose abdominal muscles.

When diet and exercise fail to get satisfactory results, men and women often seek tummy tuck surgery. Also known as an “abdominoplasty,” this procedure effectively restores a tighter, more toned appearance to the abdominal area.

Candidates for Tummy Tuck

Ideal candidates for a tummy tuck are in good emotional health and are at or near their ideal body weight. Individuals undergoing tummy tuck surgery should not smoke or take blood thinning medications for at least two weeks before the procedure. Abdominoplasty is best performed after childbearing is complete.

A tummy tuck effectively improves the following conditions:

  • Sagging abdominal skin
  • Excess fat in the midsection
  • Loose or stretched abdominal muscles
  • Stretch marks on the stomach between the pubic area and the belly button

Tummy Tuck Procedure

Tummy tuck surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis with the patient under general anesthesia. Our surgeons make an incision inside the belly button and just above the pubic area that runs from one hip to the other. Excess skin and lower abdominal fat are removed, and liposuction may be used for additional contouring. After the abdominal muscles are tightened and the remaining skin is redraped to reveal a smoother, flatter abdomen, the incisions are closed.

Recovery From a Tummy Tuck

After the procedure is complete, bandages are placed over the incisions, and a compression garment is applied to reduce bruising and swelling. Drains placed during surgery to remove any excess fluid will remain for several days. Any pain or discomfort that exists during the first few days can be alleviated by prescribed medication, and most patients feel well enough to return to work after one to two weeks. To ensure a proper recovery, it is best to avoid any strenuous exercise for at least four to six weeks after surgery.

Results of Tummy Tuck

Results from abdominoplasty are long lasting as long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle. Although there will be a scar present, this will fade significantly over time and will be easily hidden within underwear or a bathing suit.
